Joyce St. George

Perfect Cover: Heart of the Film

Joyce is the center of the project and brings authenticity and realism to Perfect Cover. The book is based on her life and times as the first female hired to investigate corruption within the entire criminal justice system of New York City during the 70s.

For more than six years, Joyce took on dirty cops, corrupt judges and drug-dealing correction officers. And for six years, Joyce crashed through the glass ceiling of law enforcement while accepting less pay, no training and few male investigators willing to partner with her. Joyce ultimately became one of the most successful investigators at her agency and helped convict several judges, police officers and organized crime figures.

Raised in the housing projects, Joyce learned to get around the streets of New York City. At home, with a racist Italian father who banned her Puerto Rican mother from speaking Spanish, seeing her family or otherwise expressing her “Puerto Ricanness,” Joyce learned to hide parts of herself and invent new identities. This prepared her for a life of undercover in corruption, but also forced her to hide her job from her family, friends and even lovers.

Joyce did all this while studying criminal justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice at night. Young and inexperienced, Joyce navigated clumsily through the sexism of her partners and bosses, finishing college in secrecy, and confronting the racism within her bi-cultural parents. And, as Joyce altered herself to fit her different undercover assignments, she shed her naïveté and self-doubt and discovered who she was.

Because Joyce kept journals during her stint at the anti-corruption agency, she brings details of investigations and her life that cannot be replicated through imagination. As a result, the film will have a sharp lense and graphic flow.
