Perfect Cover: An Independent Film

A few words on independent films:

"Trying to compare Little Miss Sunshine to The Blair Witch Project or Clerks to The Passion of Christ might seem like an all but futile endeavor. But there is one thing that all four of these films have in common: They are independent films, commonly known as indie films. Films such as these present a unique opportunity for investors.

An indie film is produced independently from major Hollywood studios. Because of their distance from Hollywood, indie films are often seen as more artsy or edgy than major studio productions. They are shown around the world at festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival in Utah or the Cannes Film Festival in France. Particularly buzz-worthy projects are sometimes purchased by major studios for distribution. Indie films are funded with the producers' own money, through loans, or with the help of private investors.

The cost of producing an indie film varies widely depending on the project, anywhere from a few thousand dollars to $20 million or more.

In Hollywood terms, a low budget film is anything under $10 million.  Little Miss Sunshine’s budget was $8 million, while The Blair Witch Project cost a mere $60,000 to produce. At the other end of the spectrum, Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ boasted a budget of $30 million."

Alleviating some of the risk:

Paranormal Activity was produced last year on a $15,000 budget and has grossed over $150 MILLION dollars so far worldwide. Any investor lucky enough to invest $1 into that film (with an investor agreement comparable to that of the Perfect Cover), would have received five-hundred thousand dollars in return (or 500,000%).

Since that was a Paranormal Anomaly, let’s be more realistic with our projections and explore Perfect Cover. The Perfect Cover budget is currently slated at $5 Million. If Perfect Cover were to gross $50 million, investors would be looking at returns in the 450% range.

Returns on these projects can be all across the map. Although exact returns on investment are unknown for the aforementioned films, the worldwide gross net income can give a rough idea of range. Little Miss Sunshine grossed $100,320,452 worldwide, The Blair Witch Project grossed $248,639,099 and The Passion of the Christ grossed $611,899,420. A good source of referece for such budget and income statistics can be found at BoxOfficeMojo.com.

The truth is, no matter how you approach it, the independent film business can be risky and investing in an independent film isn’t something to take lightly. Make no mistake, movie making is a risky endeavour and there is always the chance of zero return.

With that in mind, It takes much more than a good story and people throwing money at a camera crew to make a successful independent film. Often the difference between success and failure in the motion picture is having the right talent. Once you’ve got your hands on the perfect story, one way to offset the risk is to fasten a creative and accomplished team of Hollywood movers and shakers, a respected director and attach the the right stars to the film. PERFECT COVER has that edge.
